Depression

Depression is a pervasive illness that impacts nearly all aspects of a patient's life.  However, it affects everyone differently.  Some patients can't sleep at all when they're depressed.  For others, all they want to do is sleep, and they struggle to get out of bed and meet life's demands.  Finding a treatment provider who is knowledgeable, skilled, and adept at identifying and treating symptoms of depression is important.  First of all, there are many different types of depression.  Second of all, depression can be incredibly dangerous if it is accompanied by self-harming behaviors or feelings of wanting to die (i.e. suicidal ideation).

Dr. Sternweis-Yang conducted her doctoral dissertation research on "Medication Adherence in Children and Adolescents with Major Depressive Disorder" in conjunction with Dr. Graham Emslie's NIMH-funded "Remission and Relapse" study and Dr. Beth Kennard's NIMH-funded "Relapse Prevention" study. Dr. Sternweis-Yang also worked as the lead psychologist on the Children's Medical Center of Dallas' General Psychiatry Inpatient Unit where she collaborated on the development of a 5-day protocol for children and adolescents struggling with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Suicidal Thoughts.  Dr. Sternweis-Yang is knowledgeable and skilled in a number of treatment interventions that will target the specific areas that are being negatively affected by a patient's depression.
